The Phenomenon of Women Purchasing Firearms is Much More...

Recently the news has been flooded with stories of the recent rise in women purchasing handguns. The catchy headlines of "Chicks with Guns" and the undertones hidden in "Babes and Bullet's" is totally missing the mark and minimizing this ever growing group of intelligent and empowered women.
Photos of pink guns flash across the screen as if it is some grand shopping spree, when what is really happening is that smart and strong women are simply taking responsibility for their own self protection. This is a very serious issue, just ask any women that has been assaulted, raped or had their home invaded. If violence has not touched them personally, it has to women they know.

Women are eager to learn how to handle a gun safely and with confidence. This is evidenced by the fact that gun safety classes across the nation are filled to capacity with women. The male driven gun industry needs now to be eager to learn how to meet the needs of these women. Yes, pink is a very nice color and makes for a very attractive gun or holster, but the needs of women go much deeper than pink. What women want is a gun they can be comfortable with, shoot proficiently, carry comfortably and one that will do what it is meant to do, stop an attacker.

An educated, equipped and empowered woman is a fierce force - when attacked AND at the cash register.

I do agree with you. In fact I went to purchase my own gun this weekend for the first time. My husband bought my last two. He did well, but as a wise woman wrote on my FB post "It is like buying shoes, you need to try them on." (okay, paraphrase.) I was VERY INTIMIDATED by this process. The whole sales staff was men. (Helpful, but still men.) All the patrons were men, with maybe one woman with her husband. The entire store was geared toward male taste. Which is fine; I have not desire to bash men here!!

Anyway, between this experience and your website which I recently found, I am encouraged; and inspired to open a store geared or tailored toward women. I do not want the pink/flashy stereotypical chick store, but classy and aimed at the challenges and unique issues of women and shooting sports.

Okay, all this to say, I would love to talk to a member of The Well Armed Woman and pick your brains. I certainly do not want to compete with you guys. I am just inspired.

  2. PINK guns

Is anyone else offended by the pink pistols? A few years ago I was shopping for a new pistol. Immediately the guy hands me a pink 32. I am 6 2 in my heels, not a tiny little person and I said that is too small - I was interested in the Glock 23. He told me that it would be "too powerful" for a GIRL............Because I am a "girl" I am not weak, I am not at the mercy of society and I am offended that the gun salesman thinks that a gun must be pink and "cute" for a "girl". I left, and went to a store that appreciated the female gun owner and MY needs. I bought that Glock 23, later a Glock 36 and now a Glock 20 is next on my list. Please dont think that because we are "girls" that a pink gun will pacify us.

  3. Im not offended by the pinks. I just don't think the color is practical for the purpose.
And I must applaud you for having the common sense to leave that store and go to one that appreciated you. Fortunately, I haven't encountered any of that here. There seems to be quite a 2nd Amendment understanding among the stores around here.

  10. So, I thought I would come to this site and see if I can get any feedback. I am a 61 year old woman, who has a number of guns, have shot for years, brought other woman into the shooting world and run a 22 rimfire 2 gun event at our local gun club.
Now, I am thinking about getting into 3 gun events. Does anyone have any suggestions for the type of guns I should look into??
